The Heartbreak Samples, Pt. 2: Coldest Winter

[Nov22]

808s & Heartbreak, Samples

This is the second in a series of posts in which we post a song sampled on Kanye’s new album “808s & Heartbreak”.

Coldest Winter contains interpolations of "Memories Fade" by Tears For Fears.

Kanye has always been more adventurous with the bands and genres from which he chooses to draw inspiration, and "Memories Fade" by English pop rock group Tears For Fears is no exception.

The song was first released in 1983 on the album "The Hurting" — very fitting for a sample on an album about heartbreak, don't you think?

"'Memories Fade' is an incredibly wordy song. It's got a good feeling, but I find the actual indulgence in the words a bit too much." -- Roland Orzabal (Lead singer of Tears For Fears)

"how does he find all these samples?"

He listens to music...Tear For Fears is a dope group...Kanye knows that...The Hurting is a great album..although I like their second album better...Coldest Winter does embody the best part of the song though...great interpolation.

  • robert carter

where does kanye find these samples from?

  • rashad

does kanye listen to every song in the world so he can find a sample?
    wtf lol
    i still love it though

  • SUNNiE dEE

i like the theme of the song, but i think a saprano needs to sing it, his voice is too deep. it will sound colder abd more thoughtful. i like kanye's bettter, not just cuz i love everything he does, but he made it more upbeat. its stilla a sadd song, no matter wat the version is.

  • Dude

Wow. That hurt. I thought Kanye was a genius. The coldest winter is a straight up copy. Not a sample. I repeat, a copy.

  • Ross

What makes ye such a genius and incredible at what he does is because he finds this shit, and lays a hard drum track over it and makes it into a masterpeice.... yeah he uses the song, but how does he find the songs..... CAUSE HES A BEASTTT

  • GoGoGadget

In all fairness, the songs weren't HIDDEN.
He does some great things with samples, but coldest winter is abit too similar to this song for me, its almost laziness lol.

  • yo motha

    well listen here kids
dude is sick regardless but come on now... thats almost exactly the same beat and lyrics.
    vary it up a bit.
constructive crticism needs to be taken into consideration here. :P

kanye is still the master at producing tho hehe

I hope KW pays royalties to T4F. The second I heard KW song, I thought of T4F. That’s not a sampling that KW did, its plagiarism.
