“808s & Heartbreak” Is Now Officially Platinum

The sales figures are in and Kanye West remains ahead of the pack, bringing home his fourth platinum plaque just one day before ‘09.
After 7 weeks, the Chi-Town mega rapper/producer’s latest record, 808s & Heartbreak, has officially moved 1,023,900 units according to Nielsen’s SoundScan. Ye sold 165,100 discs this week, landing him at the number 5 spot on the Billboard 200, 6 spots up from last week.

That would make this Kanye’s third biggest debut of his career (following Graduation and Late Registration) and his third No. 1 album.

This is the first of a series in which we’ll post a song sampled on Kanye’s new album “808s & Heartbreak”.
Robocop contains samples from “Estella’s Theme”, a song from the score of the 1998 movie Great Expectations.
“The film is a modern re-telling of the classic Charles Dickens tale ‘Great Expectations’” writes kanYeLive.com member dayobliss, “Estella is a woman incapable of loving a man. Her mother raised her to be a cold person who cannot feel or return another’s passion, and is destined to crush any man’s dreams. I thought this was fairly pertinent in the overall context of 808s & Heartbreak, and especially the song itself.”
Bonus: Kanye used the same sample in an unreleased track in 2003.

Of all the stories Donda West read to her little son at bedtime, “Pinocchio” must have been a favorite. The tale of the puppet who longed to be human obviously resonates with Kanye West. On “Pinocchio Story,” the bonus live track that turns out to be the key to his audaciously introspective fourth album, he freestyles about the character, repeatedly singing, “I want to be a real boy.”
“808s and Heartbreak,” out Monday on Roc-A-Fella Records but now streaming on MySpace, is a meditation on realness as it’s been defined by materialism and machismo in the hip-hop world, and by love and sorrow in the larger one. Wrought in hushed mechanical beats, computer-altered vocals and samples so subtle they’re barely noticeable, it’s West’s foray into confessional music.

Island Def Jam is moving up by a day the release dates for the Killers’ “Day & Age,” Ludacris’ “Theater of the Mind” and Kanye West’s “808s & Heartbreak,” in what it says is an attempt to capitalize on the Thanksgiving shopping weekend.
All three albums were due Nov. 25 but will now come out off-cycle on Monday, Nov. 24 in both physical and digital formats.
Each project has already spawned a hit. The Killers’ “Human” is No. 6 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart, while Ludacris’ “One More Drink” co-starring T-Pain is No. 34 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. West’s “Love Lockdown” has already peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100.

In 2004, Ye said his fourth album would be “A Good Ass Job” (he also named Late Registration and Graduation), but if recent rumors are anything to go by, this will not be the title. It may not even follow the theme of the last 3 albums…
