Kanye West Sued for “Good Life”
Mar27
Kanye West has been sued for alleged sampling a 1985 song for his hit single, “Good Life,” without permission.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ.com, Maryland based songwriter-producer D’Mystro filed the lawsuit on March 20 in the U.S. District Court of Maryland, alleging that West “didn’t obtain a license to use” samples from his “Volume of Good Life,” which was written when Kanye was “only at the age of 6 or 7″.
In addition to West, the suit names Roc-A-Fella Records, publishing company BMI and singer T-Pain (real name: Faheem Najm), who is featured on the song.
He claims that West’s use of “contains vulgar and offensive” images on “Good Life,” “harms the reputation” of his much cleaner song.
D’Mystro is seeking 85% of all world sales of West’s music that samples his material.

Rare ‘Everything I Am’ Performance Video

From: *****@gmail.com
To: contact@kanyelive.com
I was at an under 500 person Kanye Concert CD release concert the week of Graduation album release. We werent supposed to video tape, but I got the entire “everything I am” song he did with a close to 1 min freestyle that was really nice. It was at Big Boys backyard breakfast, only 4 days after 50 cent had done the same show. Anyway, I just now found the video and put it up on youtube. No other sites have this version, the guy next to me who was filming got his camera taken away.
Cool thanks!

Kanye West - Graduation
Aug31
“The hood love to listen to Jeezy and Weezy, and oh yeah Yeezy; I did it for the Glory.”
What’s left to do when your debut album was a breakthrough classic and your sophomore album avoids the slump to receive even more praise? Well, you graduate to the next level of course. Yet with a two year gap that occurred for Graduation to be complete, Kanye West shows it wasn’t as simple as passing classes and grabbing that diploma. And even with a shorter track list this time around (the first two were 21 tracks), Graduation packs a piercing punch.
With a hollowing welcome, “Good Morning” gives us the tantalizing new sounds that Ye’ has honed as of late. His lyrics give an outlook of a perspective that reminisces of the past and fantasizes of the future, De Lorean included (a tie to his Marty McFly lyrics in “Southside”). And if his added tagline from “The Ruler’s Back” doesn’t raise an eyebrow, you may need to dig into your iPod and throw it on.
The boastful accolades from Kanye didn’t go anywhere on tracks like “Champion” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” On the former, he raps “Last week I paid a visit to the institute, they got the Dropout keeping kids in the school” to vocalists singing “This is a story of a Champion.” For the latter and his first single, his arrogance warrants a hail mary, rapping “So if the Devil wear prada Adam n’ Eve wear nada I’m in between but way more fresher, with way less effort.”
DJ Toomp helped on the drums with “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” but it didn’t stop there. Kanye collaborated with Toomp as well on the bass pounding “Good Life,” with a chorus from the most popular fake voice on radio, T-Pain. If the title of this song doesn’t emulate Kanye’s lyrics better than any other track he’s done (think of it as Touch The Sky 1.5), and likewise doesn’t make you throw your hands up in the air (go ahead, wave em’ like you just don’t care), I digress.
Kanye’s sampling of Daft Punk’s synthpop-sound for his second single “Stronger” provides a more “futuristic” amplitude to his crateful of soul records. This same structural sound is seamlessly apparent in a few other tracks such as “Flashing Lights,” a string-swaying melody featuring Dwele on the vocals. In it Kanye paints a troubling picture of the girl that still haunts. Also on “I Wonder,” Mr. West pronounces his intimate thoughts through a synth-based beat, piano added for a more subtle approach.
If there was one signature detail Graduation couldn’t exist without, it would be that chipmunk sound we’ve grown to love. Kanye brings it back for us on “The Glory,” a catchy and soulful track that Common described it as “a raw street joint” when it was originally for his album. Kanye comes correct on the lyrics and with wordplay so confidently witty, he raps:
“While ya’ll was in limbo, I raised the bar up, I touched on everything, married to the game roc-a chain still the wedding ring you bridesmaids catch the garter. On nights when Ye’ romanced, camera’s flashed so much, that I gotta do that Yayo dance.”
The two collaborations found on the album, one highly anticipated, the other quite surprising, shine a rare light of disappointment for Graduation. Chris Martin’s chorus on “Homecoming” is inviting, but one cannot deny history. Kanye’s lyrics for this track match exactly to an unreleased track he did with John Legend called “Home” a few years back. Needless to say, both beats are immensely gratifying to hear, but it seems Legend’s soulful voice one-ups Martin’s mellow-toned vocals. And then on “Barry Bonds,” Lil’ Wayne spits a verse that has many scratching their heads. His word association vaguely etches an attempt, casting him as lazy.
If the comical title of “Drunk and Hot Girls” isn’t confusing enough on a Kanye West album, the lyrics emphasize an angry and frustrated man at the bar, trying to get laid. Now, it would make sense if this was maybe a fews lines on a track, but it’s the entire purpose of the song. And Mos Def singing? Stick with rapping, or going on the Dave Chappelle show (looks like you have no choice).
Ye’s enlightening tracks take a more mature stance to an astonishing career he’s had thus far. “Everything I Am” features scratches from the great DJ Premier with Kanye rapping about the naysayers who’ve got it all wrong. And paying homage to the ruler himself, Mr. West wraps up the album with “Big Brother” for president Carter. With an insightful hook, Kanye gets his chance to explain certain instances that happened in the past, and the admiration that has built up over time for Jay-Z. Forget the claims of a conscious rapper; Kanye’s lyrics on this track are just real talk.
Time and critics will decide if this album joins the same pantheon as his first two. The high standards and likewise anticipation may have killed off a few listeners, but Kanye knows this first hand; you can’t please everyone, especially to the fullest extent. And anyways, now that he has graduated, I guess he’s gonna have to go get that Good Ass Job.
PS: Let’s keep Hip-Hop alive, September 11th.

“If Kanye Sells More Records… I Won’t Put Out Any More Solo CDs”
Aug09

One of the few pictures of 50 cent fully clothed
50 Cent recently told SOHH.com that he’d give up his career if his album “Curtis” was outsold by Kanye’s “Graduation” next month.
They would like to see Kanye West give me a problem because I’ve worked myself into a space where I’ve become the favorite,
Everybody roots against the underdog when he goes against the favorite. If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out any more solo albums.
And I bet this, when Kanye West’s sales come in, he’s gonna have a 70% decrease [the second week] ’cause Def Jam is gonna buy records to keep him closer to 50 Cent. So watch the first week and then watch the second week. Watch his @#* drop off the planet. We keep our angles covered before we make a decent bet.
50 also said that he’s cut the Kanye West-produced track from his album
We worked together on an actual record to try and create something,” 50 said. “I went in with Kanye, I went in with Swizz Beatz, I went in with will.i.am, I went in with Polow [Da Don] just to see if they had something that I didn’t, to create a new direction for me that I couldn’t get my hands on. I mean these guys are popular producers [and] have a higher consistency than a guy that’s unknown, but a lot of times they may have music planned that doesn’t fit the project that you’re working on.

Late Graduation?
Jul19
It looks like Graduation may be released a few weeks later than expected.
In a few recent interviews Kanye has said that August 21st isn’t the definite date for Graduation’s release and that the album could now be released as late as September 11th. Why? Apparently for “extra promotion”.

Fortunately, even if the album IS released late, we still have enough of Graduation right now to keep us entertained until then, and there’s more to come…
Kanye recently shot the video for the third single from Graduation - Good Life (feat. T-Pain) - and we can expect to see it before September. This means we may hear the song just a few weeks from now.
What are your thoughts on Graduation being pushed back?
dang kanye
damn , i dont think i can wait that long
I wouldn’t mind Graduation being pushed back for creative reasons like Kanye wanting to work on the album some more or because it’s still not finished, but it’s pretty annoying if the delay is just for the sake of promotion.

Daft Punk
Now if you knew anything about Daft Punk you’d know that Thomas and Guy-Manuel don’t show their faces very often and that they spend a lot of time dressed up as robots (see above), even at concerts - so that’s most likely how we’ll see them in this video too.
Expect to see this video sometime around July-August.

‘Glow In The Dark’ Tour

UPDATE FEB 2008: Check out our constantly-updated TOUR page for all the latest info on Kanye’s Glow In The Dark Tour: http://www.kanyelive.com/tour
There are no dates yet, but Kanye West told us first: His new tour will be called “Glow in the Dark.” His last headlining outing, the Touch the Sky Tour, was a major lighting extravaganza, so you can imagine what ‘Ye is going to bring to the table this time.
West has been hanging out with some prolific artists lately, namely Japanese legend Takashi Murakami, who Americans probably know best for his work with the Louis Vuitton rainbow pattern. Murakami designed the cover for Kanye’s latest record, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” as well as the new outrageous jewelry piece the Chicago native has been wearing on his chain lately.
“He did a three-minute animated piece for one of the songs,” West told us recently in L.A. in regards to his new Graduation LP. “Murakami, his work has been stunning to me because pop art is really expressive, representative and expressive and emotional, and it looks like something you can do yourself. [But] you cannot do no Murakami sh– yourself. You cannot do this at home. He has this studio out in Japan that has 30 artists working at one time. I love Japanese culture and I was always into art, and Murakami is really a god in the art world.
“I’ve heard people come up to him and say, ‘You’re becoming more godlike every day,’ ” West continued. “Every single that’s coming out for my album, he did the artwork for the covers. … And all the merchandising for the new album is Murakami.”
Besides the release of “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” last week, Kanyeezee continues to be one of the most vocals MCs in the game right now, jumping on a remix of Ne-Yo’s “Because of You.” …

It’s official: Kanye graduates this September!
May11
Kanye’s upcoming album ‘Graduation’ FINALLY has an official release date. September 18.
Def Jam has confirmed that the album will be released in September (but says the 18th isn’t concrete as of yet) … and according to Kanye we can expect not one, but TWO new songs AND videos BEFORE September, both of which have been filmed already!
“Me and Hype [Williams] went out, we shot nine days. We were out in Japan, we were out in the desert. We’re taking it serious.”
The first single from the album will be “Stronger”, an uptempo track that sample’s Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”, and will no doubt be everybody’s favourite track this summer!
“I’m graduating from a school called ‘Universe City’.” Kanye said, speaking on the concept of the album. “I think the sound is bigger this time. It’s bigger and simpler, where the notes really connect with you and I say lines … I know the power of my words, so when I rap, I know it’s gonna impact the world. I know I’m gonna be performing anywhere from the Summer Jam stage [at New Jersey's Giants Stadium] to [New York nightclub] Speed to the House of Blues in L.A., to London to Brazil to Ireland. … I’m making music for somebody sitting in a car on their way to work trying to get through traffic and my music is helping them zone out, to a 60,000-seater where I’m opening up for the Rolling Stones or U2. I’m not talking about you two ? I’m talking about U2 the group. Like I say, ‘Why would I do a song with you two when I just got offstage with U2? I’m not even talking to you two.’ That’s how I feel.”
“I’m ready to take over the world once again,” he added. “I have a lot to say. I got a lot more music to make. I’m still going through stuff. People are still going through stuff. I make music people can relate to every day. My music just isn’t about my story. … There’s not one artist in the world that has as much responsibility as me. When I deliver a piece of music, it has to connect with the most genres of music. I don’t care who you name. If you name rap artists, their only responsibility is to rap crowds. If you name a pop artist, their only responsibility is to a pop crowd. If you name some French dance music, their responsibility is to the cool crowd. But I have to deliver songs. All these people are looking at me from super-middle America to the hipsters like, ‘What’s he gonna do next?’”
And to make everything even better (?) Japanese artist ‘Mr’ - yes, that’s his name - will be designing the cover art for the album!
Kanye performs new track in Malaysia
Apr09
Kanye performed a brand new track in front of 5000 fans during his first appearance in Southest Asia.
The track will be on Graduation, Kanye’s upcoming album, which will be released later this year.
“It’s 80 per cent done. If Late Registration sounded different from College Dropout, then this is going to be an even bigger leap,” he said at a Press conference earlier.
You can watch a low-quality video of Kanye performing “Stronger” on YouTube here.
Kanye West fans, Get ready to be surprised!
Apr04
From star-ecentral.com
Charismatic hip-hop superstar and multiple Grammy award-winner Kanye West is the kind of guy that likes to play his cards really close to his chest, especially when it comes to divulging information about his new album or his live show.
During a phone interview from Tokyo yesterday, West, who is scheduled to perform here on Sunday, remained typically enigmatic as to what kind of show Malaysians could expect from him.
Needless to say, the hits from his hugely successful 2004 debut The College Dropout and the 2005 follow-up Late Registration will feature prominently.
When pushed for a bit of information about the Kuala Lumpur show, West, in his trademark rhyming accent, offered this answer: “I don’t really want to say too much about the show.
“I just want people to know that it’s going to be crazy. I don’t want people to read the entire plot of the movie and then go see it and go ‘oh, he’s about to do this,’ you know?”
The 29-year-old rapper will be making his first visit to Malaysia.
“I’m all about surprises; I want people to feel it and experience it without having any preconceived notion. That’s just not my style,” he added.
As for playing new material from his forthcoming album in September, he said: “I might do some new stuff. I’m not sure. I’m finishing up the new album right now.
“I don’t want to give away what the sound is. I don’t really want to speak about it yet. I’m just in the process of working on it. I will say this – I never ever do the same thing twice.”
He also likened his live shows to his record-making process.
“When I did Late Registration, nobody knew until the last minute some of the features on it. I know in today’s age – the Internet age – everybody wants to get behind the scenes way before, but I still like the whole gift of music concept.”
